Wallpaper at the Festival Bar Brighton Dome

Part way through major refurbishment works at the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre site I received a request from Paul Dean to discuss plans for the Festival Bar at the Corn Exchange. He and his team from the architectural design studio Drinkall Dean arrived with a complete presentation for the wall area of the festival bar. The proposed wall paper would celebrate the first Brighton Festival in 1967 reviving the graphic eye motif used at the time. An existing drawing of mine called ‘Busy Bouquet’ was sampled to provide a wall of flowers as a sentimental psychedelic reference to the ‘summer of love’. The Who played the first festival which provided Paul with a further link to my part in the making of the wallpaper. I was concerned about how sampled areas in the cross hatched 24” square drawing would behave being enlarged to wall size but the grain of the drawing held well.
